Remote Engineering Culture: Async by Default

How we run a high-output engineering team without drowning in Zoom meetings. The power of written documentation and async updates.

Remote Engineering Culture: Async by Default cover image

Meetings are toxic to flow state. We prioritize writing over talking to allow our engineers to do deep work.

The Cost of Context Switching

It takes an engineer 20 minutes to get back into "the zone" after an interruption. A "quick sync" destroys an hour of productivity.

Writing is Thinking

We force major decisions to be written as RFCs (Request for Comments). This allows everyone to think deeply before responding, rather than rewarding the loudest voice in the room.

Standups that Matter

We do async standups in Slack. "What did I ship yesterday? What am I clicking today?" No cameras, no waiting for the PM to join. Just updates.
